Magdeburg 2014

Photographs and a video of the city of Magdeburg and its surroundings

The last stage of our town tour was Magdeburg which we reached on the 7/31/2014 against 17.30H. We were prewarned and the journey to our hotel at the Salbker lake confirmed the warnings: we saw a lot of ruined and a lot of renovation-destitute buildings. You could badly compare Magdeburg with Dresden, even if we saw a lot of new noble buildings and in the centre also nicely renovated old buildings.

For our dog it was the most important that we lay near with the Elbe with her big meadows. In the centre of Magdeburg the "Green Citadel", a master piece of architecture by Hundertwasser, caught the eye of course, but also the Monastery of our Lady, used as an art museum today,  repaid an inspection. The Magdeburg cathedral and the buildings round it were impressive also. Today the Johanniskirche is used for events. From it's tower one has a good view about the town. From here we discovered the Elbauenpark with the millennium tower and the panoramic train which should be stopped after the season 2014. Of course we did not miss a journey with the panoramic train.

Because of the Gastronomy we had orientated ourselves up to now around the Elbe and the old market. On the last day of our stay we discovered after the visit of the waterway cross the place of Hasselbach with many nice facades  and inexpensive comfortable restaurants.

Even if Magdeburg did not have the atmosphere of Dreden - a trip it was worth, nevertheless. Ours ended in the 8/5/2014 at home in Wildenrath (17.00h).
